ABOUT
US
Hutton-Loyd Tree Farm is owned by Oliver (Herb) Loyd. The
farm was purchased through the years in different tracts: in 1981 the Knob Lick
Valley, 1986 the Pea Ridge portion, 1987 the southern connection of Pea Ridge to
Hwy 32, and in 2001 the Old George Day portion containing the northern portion
of Big Run Lake. The Farm consists of a total of 1125 acres: 860 acres of
woodlands, including 60 acres of non commercial wildlife reserve sections, 38
acres of lake, 3 acres of ponds, 180 acres of nursery and Christmas tree
production fields, and 44 acres of grounds for buildings, roads and other
improvements. The farm includes 30 miles of internal interlaced trails for
horseback riding and hiking.
Christmas Tree Farm
Hutton-Loyd Tree Farm started growing Christmas Trees in 1982 and started
selling trees in 1986. Hutton-Loyd Tree Farm grows approximately 60,000 trees
annually, which consist mostly of scotch and white pine. An estimated 2000-2500
cut trees are harvested per year, selling to wholesale, retail and choose and
cut markets. Hutton-Loyd Tree Farm participates as a partner in a Christmas tree
lot in Lexington, Kentucky as well. In addition to selling to garden centers,
Christmas tree lots, and non-profit organizations, contributions of Christmas
Trees are made to an area Salvation Army annually. Open daily the weekend before
Thanksgiving thru the weekend before Christmas for retail and choose and cut
customers, this is a fun and exciting time for families to come out to choose
and cut their own Christmas Tree. Families come to Hutton-Loyd year after year
as part of their Christmas Tradition. Hutton-Loyd Tree Farm is a member of the
Kentucky Christmas Tree Association and the National Christmas Tree Association.
Christmas Accessories
Using greenery grown on the farm, Hutton-Loyd Tree Farm makes wreaths, swags,
garland, centerpieces, and other Christmas accessories during the busy Christmas
season. An estimated 450-500 wreaths, 150–200 swags, and 3500 feet of garland
are sold each year. Special orders are always welcome.
Nursery
Hutton-Loyd Tree Farm is also a grower of horticultural products, growing an
estimated 125,000 trees and shrubs per year. While white pine is the nursery’s
specialty, a variety of spruce trees, evergreens, shade trees, deciduous and
ornamental shrubs are also grown. Digging season is from September thru April
(weather conditions permitting). Hutton-Loyd Tree Farm sells 4000-6000 trees per
year to both the wholesale and retail market, which includes garden centers and
landscape contractors. Hoping that markets hold, Hutton-Loyd Tree Farm is
striving to double sales, expanding sales to 10,000 to 12,000 trees and shrubs
per year within 3 to 4 years. Hutton-Loyd Tree Farm is a member of the Kentucky
Nursery and Landscape Association and American Nursery and Landscape
Association.
Fishing Club
While
Big Run Lake is a watershed lake, one must obtain a permit to cross the property
of Hutton-Loyd Tree Farm for access. The fishing club started in 1996 and has
grown to 43 members from Fleming County and other surrounding counties.
Membership in the club is an annual fee with ˝ of the proceeds contributed back
into projects for the lake. Some of the projects done in the past include
stocking of Grass Carp, stocking channel catfish, building a floating dock and
creating parking and picnic space. All Kentucky fish and wildlife rules and
regulations apply.
Hunting Club
In
its third year of existence the farm is divided into 8 different hunting areas.
These areas are leased for different hunting seasons throughout the year, which
include turkey, deer, and small game. Bear sightings and signs have been seen on
the farm and hawks and song birds are always a sight to see. Like the fishing
club, ˝ of the proceeds are contributed back into the farm to help promote and
protect wildlife. Some of the projects include planting wildlife food plots and
marking the farm boundaries. All Kentucky hunting rules and regulations apply.
Education
Hutton-Loyd Tree Farm has organized field trips during spring, fall and winter.
In the spring students are invited to celebrate Arbor Day. In October, students
are invited during one of the most beautiful times on the farm, the peak of fall
color change, for a leaf art project. Christmas time is the most popular of our
field trips. Children of all ages come out to get into the spirit of Christmas.
